Teacher Fired for Drinking Guinness

Ashley Payne, former teacher from Barrow County, Georgia is suing the school district where she was forced to resign after the principal discovered her facebook page.  It turns out the 24 year old teacher posted pictures on her private facebook page of her European vacation. What were the scandalous items that he found? A photo of her with a pint of Guinness (after visiting the brewery in Ireland Levitra) and a photo of her with a glass of wine (from a winery in Italy). Oh, there was also an expletive (the “B” word) on her page which was referring to the name of a bingo game she plays.

So this poor girl gets fired for having a Guinness and dropping the “B” word… if this were the norm, most of the world would be unemployed!

The Proper Way to Drink a Pint

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009
After all this time drinking Guinness (and beer in general) I thought I knew what I was doing.
Not so said Fergal Murray, Master Brewer at Guinness! Fergal took the time to teach us the proper way to drink a pint of Guinness. From what I can remember, it went something like this:
  1. Of course you need to start with a proper six part pour.
  2. Stand tall and confident (as you know you are drinking the finest beverage in the world).
  3. Raise your elbow to ensure proper intake (I later discovered a new medical condition known as “Guinness Elbow”).
  4. Keep your eyes to the horizon – do not put your face down into the glass.
  5. Bring the glass up to your lips and “pull” in a healthy amount of the cool, black, refreshing stout.
  6. As you continue to drink your pint, you should have residue rings left on the glass showing how many times you drank (some of us had many fewer rings than others).
  7. Finally, since you finished the pint the correct way, you should still have the “head” left at the bottom of the glass. You can use this to refresh your palette and get ready for another!
Cheers!

Fergal Murray Endorsement

While we were hanging out with Guinness Brewmaster Fergal Murray, we asked him to give the site a shout out. It was hard to find a quit place, but the hall Buy Ativan way worked well. Here is a large version of the video. It will also live over there —> on the top right.

Guinness Master Brewer, Fergal Murray!

Guinness 6 Part Pour with Guinness Master Brewer Fergal Murray

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Last week we were invited to meet Guinness Master Brewer Fergal Murray! Of course we were happy to accept this invitation. We took the train into Manhattan and met up with him at Latitude, a couple blocks from Times Square. We’ll post a run down of the evening’s events later. One of the highlights of Volume Pills the night was getting a lesson on the Guinness 6 Part Pour. I remember last St. Patrick day seeing Jimmy Fallon do this on his show and being jealous. Well who knew we’d get our turn too?!

Here is our Halloween Pour, a week late, but here none the less. The pour itself did happen on Halloween. We had the idea for this a while back, and almost didn’t get it done this year, but here it is in all it’s Guinness O’ Lantern glory!

Yesterday on twitter, a friend pointed out the book, “The Search for God and Guinness” to us. He also sent a link for bloggers to get the book for free in exchange for a review. We went through the process and have been approved. I’m not sure how long it will take to get the book, but once we get it and read it we’ll post the review here. The book is really intriguing, as it combines two of my favorite subjects. Here is a synopsis of the book:

The Search for God and Guinness
A Biography of the Beer that Changed the World
By Stephen Mansfield

Description:

The history of Guinness, one of the world’s most famous brands, reveals the noble heights and crushing descents of a great family and an innovative business.

It began in Ireland in the late 1700’s. The water in Ireland, indeed throughout Europe, was famously undrinkable, and the gin and whiskey that took its place was devastating civil society. It was a disease ridden, starvation plagued, alcoholic age, and Christians like Arthur Guinness—as well as monks and even evangelical churches—brewed beer to offer a healthier alternative to the poisonous waters and liquors of the times. This is where the Guinness tale began. Now, 246 years and 150 countries later, Guinness is a global brand, one of the most consumed beverages in the world. The tale that unfolds during those two and a half centuries has power to thrill audiences today: the generational drama, business adventure, industrial and social reforms, deep-felt faith, and the beer itself.

Celebrating Arthur’s Day.

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Yesterday was packed full of Guinness. We are overwhelmed with the wishes from twitter followers, youtube commenters and site visitors. Our traffic has sky rocketed this week. Thanks!

Last night we headed out to Mannion’s in Somerville for some celebratory pints. Sadly we missed the Guinness girls. Dennis was more than happy to let us get a video of him preforming his magic, we get a little tour of what is semenax their different Guinness awards too. Make sure you check out his tie, it’s awesome. The background bar banter is nice too.

If you didn’t get a chance to go out last night, be sure to get out this weekend and raise a pint to Arthur! 250 Years! Let’s hope we’re all still around for the Guinness 300!

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

l_198_126_14E85104-213C-4D87-B4D5-581C73E372B6.jpegHere is another press release from Guinness. Tomorrow is the big day! The 250 anniversary of the signing of the lease for St. James Gate. Make sure you get out and raise a pint TO ARTHUR!

AMERICA CELEBRATES ARTHUR’S DAY – 250 REMARKABLE YEARS
More than 5000 bars, pubs around the United States to raise a pint on September 24th

New York (September 23, 2009) – On Thursday, September 24, the makers of GUINNESS®, the world’s most iconic stout, will unite with consumers around the world to toast 250 years of brewing tradition started by one remarkable man: Arthur Guinness. The global celebration known as Arthur’s Day marks the 250th anniversary of Arthur Guinness signing the 9,000-year lease on the famous St. James’s Gate brewery in Dublin in 1759. The commemoration of this milestone will begin in Dublin and spread westward throughout the United States and across the world to cities including Lagos, Yaoundé and Kuala Lumpur.

More than 5,000 pubs and bars across the United States will be hosting celebrations for patrons to share in this historical occasion and participate in the toasts to salute Arthur Guinness occurring around the globe at 17:59pm (5:59 pm) local time. Consumers across the country can also join in the global Arthur’s Day celebration by tuning in to a simulcast of the festivities on Channel 101 on DirecTV®, which will be airing in some of the local establishments hosting Arthur’s Day celebrations.

“The excitement surrounding this remarkable anniversary is coming to life throughout the US and around the world,” said Patrick Hughes, Brand Director, DIAGEO – Guinness USA. “It speaks volumes about those who love Guinness that they are so eager to join us in honoring and celebrating this remarkable milestone.”

When consumers tune in to the simulcast, they will join the worldwide celebration of Arthur’s Day events including toasts to Arthur from a variety of artists and celebrities. Thousands of people will be coming together in Dublin to experience live music events in more than 30 venues across the city from intimate gigs in pubs and small music venues to a concert at the St. James’s Gate brewery itself. Over 60 performers such as The Black Eyed Peas, Sean Paul, Sir Tom Jones, Estelle, Kelly Rowland and David Gray will perform in Dublin and the other cities celebrating Arthur. Each participating city around the globe will commence its celebrations by raising pints to Arthur at 17:59pm local time, creating a truly global toast.

“The global toast to Arthur Guinness and other activities offer a variety of ways to share in the energy and excitement of Arthur’s Day, said Hughes. “We encourage everyone to join in the celebration and celebrate responsibly.”

There has been a whirlwind of activity leading up to Arthur’s Day. Limited edition GUINNESS 250 Anniversary Stout was introduced in April 2009 with a toast from baseball legend Rich “Goose” Gossage. And three lucky people will learn just weeks from now if they are winners in the GUINNESS Remarkable Experiences sweepstakes, which is offering a chance to go into space, to the bottom of the sea or in studio with multi-platinum recording artists The Black Eyed Peas. Now, there’s nothing left to do but ring in Arthur’s Day with a giant party held all over the world where people are raising pints with their friends.
